Probabilistic risk analysis in subsurface hydrology

چکیده
[1] We present a general framework for probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) of subsurface contamination. PRA provides a natural venue for the rigorous quantification of structural (model) and parametric uncertainties inherent in predictions of subsurface flow and transport. A typical PRA starts by identifying relevant components of a subsurface system (e.g., a buried solid-waste tank, an aquitard, a remediation effort) and proceeds by using uncertainty quantification techniques to estimate the probabilities of their failure. These probabilities are then combined by means of fault-tree analyses to yield probabilistic estimates of the risk of system failure (e.g., aquifer contamination). Since PRA relies on subjective probabilities, it is ideally suited for assimilation of expert judgment and causal relationships. Citation: Tartakovsky, D. M. Introduction to special section on Uncertainty Assessment in Surface and Subsurface Hydrology: An overview of issues and challenges
[1] This paper introduces the Water Resources Research special section on Uncertainty Assessment in Surface and Subsurface Hydrology. Over the past years, hydrological literature has seen a large increase in the number of papers dealing with uncertainty. In this article, we present an overview of the different sources of uncertainty and the different types of problems associated with uncertaint...
متن کاملAn Integrated Approach for Modeling Water Flow and Solute Transport in the Vadose Zone
As geographical information systems (GIS) are increasingly being applied to surface and subsurface flow and transport modeling issues, it becomes important to more clearly define potential advantages and achievable objectives with this technology. This chapter describes an integrated conceptual framework for predicting basin-scale solute loading rates through and from the vadose zone. The appro...
متن کاملApplication of a probabilistic model of rainfall-induced shallow landslides to complex hollows
Recently, D’Odorico and Fagherazzi (2003) proposed “A probabilistic model of rainfall-triggered shallow landslides in hollows” (Water Resour. Res., 39, 2003). Their model describes the long-term evolution of colluvial deposits through a probabilistic soil mass balance at a point. Further building blocks of the model are: an infinite-slope stability analysis; a steady-state kinematic wave model ...
متن کاملProbabilistic risk analysis for a high-level radioactive waste repository.
A probabilistic risk analysis (PRA) for a high-level radioactive waste repository is very important since it gives an estimate of its health impacts, allowing comparisons to be made with the health impacts of competing technologies. However, it is extremely difficult to develop a credible PRA for a specific repository site because of large uncertainties in future climate, hydrology, geological ...
